"Vuvuzela moment" is an initiative which will bring Mzantsi to a standstill, make the world stand up and take notice of Mzansi's pride, its own heritage!!

The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) and Noordhoek Farm Village are joining forces once again to create awareness about blood donation and the need for safe blood across South Africa. Please make an effort to donate your blood and encourage friends and family to be a part of this blood drive.

Those eligible to donate blood must be older than 17 and younger than 65 years, weigh more than 50kg's and lead a healthy and safe lifestyle. Donors must also please remember to eat before donating blood. There are 3 restaurants and a deli at Noordhoek Farm Village - Cafe Roux, The Foodbarn (Deli & Restaurant) and the Toad in the Village, where you can get a meal before or after donating.
For more information, SMS "Blood" to 33507 and the WPBTS will call back with information on where to donate. Alternatively call (021) 507 6300, email info@wpbts.org.za or visit www.wpblood.org.za

TOP 10 REASONS TO GIVE BLOOD
10. You will get free juice and cookies.
9. You will weigh less — one pint less when you leave than when you came in.
8. It's easy and convenient — it only takes about an hour and you can make the donation at a donor center, or at one of the many Red Cross mobile blood drives.
7. It's something you can spare — most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.
6. Nobody can ask you to do any heavy lifting as long as you have the bandage on. You can wear it for as long as you like. It's your badge of honor.
5. You will walk a little taller afterwards — you will feel good about yourself.
4. You will be helping to ensure that blood is there when you or someone close to you may need it. Most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.
3. It's something you can do on equal footing with the rich and famous — blood is something money can't buy. Only something one person can give to another.
2. You will be someone's hero — you may give a newborn, a child, a mother or a father, a brother, or a sister another chance at life. In fact, you may help save up to three lives with just one donation.
1. It's the right thing to do.

TOP 10 REASONS WHY PEOPLE DON’T DONATE BLOOD:
1. I don't like needles / I am scared of needles / I am afraid to give blood
Nearly everyone feels that way at first. However, most donors will tell you that you feel only a slight initial pinch, and 7-10 minutes later, you are finished and headed for the canteen. If you take the time (and courage) to make one donation, you'll wonder why you ever hesitated.
2. I am too busy
The entire process takes about an hour, and the actual blood donation time is only 7-10 minutes. If you stop to think that an hour of your time could mean a lifetime for a premature baby, someone with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, or someone who's had an accident, you might decide that you can make the time to give the gift of life.
3. No-one ever asked me… I didn't realize my blood was needed
Consider yourself asked! There is simply no other way to supply the blood needs of hospital patients but for the generous donations of people like you.
4. I already gave this year
You can give every 56 days. Many donors give 5 times a year!
5. I am afraid I'll get AIDS
It is not possible to get AIDS by donating blood to the WPBTS. A new sterile needle is used for each donor and discarded afterwards.
6. My blood isn't the right type
Every type of blood is needed daily to meet patient needs. If you have a common blood type, there are many patients who need it, so it is in high demand. If you have a less common blood type, there are fewer donors available to give it, so it is in short supply.
7. I don't have any blood to spare
The average adult body has 10-12 pints of blood. Doctors say that healthy adults may give regularly because the body quickly replaces the blood you donate.
8. I don't want to feel weak afterward
Donating blood should not affect adversely a healthy adult because your body has plenty of blood. You will donate less than one pint, and your body, which constantly makes new blood, will replace the donated volume within 24 hours. Most people continue their usual activities after donating.
9. They won't want my blood (I am too old / I've had an illness)
If you have doubts, check with your physician. The qualified staff on duty at a blood drive or donor center will also review your medical history with you. There are a great many medical conditions do not prevent you from donating blood, or may have done so only temporarily in the past. If you are under 65, your blood is welcome!
10. I have a rare blood type, so I'll wait until there is a special need
Blood that is rare or special is almost always in short supply. There is a constant need for these blood types in order to avoid having to recruit specific blood types in a crisis.

The support for the Foodbarn Deli from locals has been absolutely fantastic and we have thoroughly enjoyed working with the tenants in this building. So, it is with some sadness that we bid farewell to our friends Maggs, Lynn & Tom from the Eatwell Gallery and Lesley from Manuka. As most of you would have noticed though, our space is getting quite cramped in the Foodbarn Deli and so when we were offered the space coming available, we jumped at it!

We are very excited to be expanding the Foodbarn Deli into these premises at Noordhoek Farm Village and look forward to bringing you even more delicious offerings. We have obtained a license to sell wine 7 days a week and will be offering wines off the restaurant wine list together with wines from the region, and obviously the famous Foodbarn Dangerou(x)s selection ... and one/two surprises.

The Foodbarn Deli is also responding to the "I really don't want to drive to the mall" feedback we so often get ... and will be increasing our range of convenience items like dairy, fruit and veg, etc. Please chat to us if there are any items you think we should be stocking and if the demand is there, we will surely make a plan.

The bad news is that the move will mean that we need to close for three days from Tuesday 23rd March ... hold thumbs!

As always, we look forward to spoiling you ...

Tom is the owner of African Experience and this month we tell you more about Tom who features as our March Village personality! A warm smile and friendly banter characterize this interesting gentleman – and a gentleman he is!

Tom grew up in the Kwazulu Natal Midlands, in the foothills of the southern Drakensberg where is family had a farm. Tom says, “The farm was about 30 km from the 'one horse town and the horse died' called Ixopo.” Not only is humour part of his make-up but a farm upbringing gave him a love of the outdoors and where he learned to fly fish. Fly fishing is still today one of his favourite pastimes. Tom still tries to go back to the Drakensberg as often as he can.

Tom finished his schooling in 1976 and did his military service. He managed to find a great job in the army in the Namibian Koakoveld, where he ended up running the Water supply department for the legionary Ben van Zyl. Tom stayed on until 1981 installing and supplying windmills and pumps to the Himba people. One Headman was so grateful he even offered Tom his daughter as a wife! It appears Tom declined the offer as he is married to the wonderful Janet and have a daughter named Jessica who is now 11 years old. Whilst in Namibia Tom was also the neutral guide for the first two elections in Namibia.

Life turned to the media world in the ‘80s when Tom worked for the SABC and later SABS in Cape Town. Fortunes led him to Johannesburg where he only managed to survive one year. Such was his distress at living in Jozi that he promptly moved to Cape Town just as the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront was getting started and developed. Tom being a go getter and self starting entrepreneur got involved and opened a fruit and vegetable shop in the V&A Waterfront – which was very successful for 10 years.

But it seems that his roots were in farm country and he moved to Noordhoek, with its’ rural feel and leafy lanes 5 years ago to join his sister Sally with their shop African Experience. African Experience is located in the “Milking Shed” at Noordhoek Farm Village and offers an extraordinary range of ecelectic, contemporary and imaginative hand made African crafts. Tom is proudly South African and was a founder member of the Proudly South African movement. What’s more - Tom and African Experience won an award as a Carrol Boyes Functional Art stockist – not bad for a little shop in the country.

You’ll notice African Experience at Noordhoek Farm Village by the bicycle outside the front of the shop and Tom’s smiling face at the front door. (Don’t forget to ask Tom about his bicycle hire options. Tom is such a good soul that if you get too far and can’t get back he’ll even come and fetch you!).

Tom – thanks for your commitment to Noordhoek Farm Village and your customers, for your consistency and reliability. Tom is the guy that will always be there for you – whatever the situation and we are proud to call him our Village Personality for the month of March.

DATE: Friday 5 March 2010
TIME: 10:30 – 14:30
VENUE: Blood Bus, Noordhoek Farm Village

The 2009 eMzantsi Carnival will take place on Saturday 5th December, and as it is the fifth time the annual event has been staged, it seems appropriate to make the theme "The Big 5". But the indigenous animals we aim to celebrate are not lions, giraffes or elephants but our local wildlife: the penguin, the whale, the baboon, the shark - and the leopard toad!

Our donation this year will be used to help feed the 750 children participating in the carnival! Yes – you read that right 750 kids participating in the Carnival. Makes you realize how big and how festive and how much work has gone into the schools programme which culminates in the carnival itself. Noordhoek Farm Village encourages all residents, friends and visitors to come south on the 5th Dec to watch more than 1000 people from 15 communities across the south peninsula take part in the parade, followed by a free stage show at Sun Valley Green!

'eMzantsi' means 'in the South' in isiXhosa and the eMzantsi Carnival is all about celebrating life in Cape Town's southern peninsula. The eMzantsi project seeks to enhance awareness of our rich cultural heritage in order to boost both tourism and pride in the valley.

The far South is so often marketed through images of its wonderful wildlife - baboons, whales, penguins - but rarely of its kaliedoscope of wonderful people, which could be its strongest selling point. The eMzantsi Carnival was initiated in 2005 by Sam Pearce of Noordhoek, Alvin Castro of Ocean View and Rodney Ndyalvan of Masiphumelele to draw our diverse communities closer together and help us visualise a shared cultural identity.

The Carnival is the culmination of a year-long community links-building process that encourages people of the South, especially children and youth, to cross boundaries and collaborate with each other's schools, clubs and churches. Around 1500 people from all over the valley join in the colourful parade and stageshow, including minstrels and marimba bands, gumboot dancers and gospel singers, break dancers and belly dancers. The Carnival takes place annually on the first Saturday of December.
The eMzantsi Carnival project, administered by Section 21 NPO the Harlequin Foundation, is a dynamic multi-faceted initiative that seeks to enhance:

Our dream for 2010 is to take advantage of the World Cup spotlight on South Africa to extend our youth exchange programme to international footballing nations who also celebrate carnival, such as Brazil and the UK. We also aim to expand the Carnival route to include the whole of southern peninsula from Muizenberg to Chapman's Peak. The road is closed once a year for runners and for cyclists, why not once for dancing children celebrating their heritage?!

Please help Noordhoek Farm Village alleviate poverty of the mind this Christmas as the villagers and our customers collect books for the children and library of Masiphumelele.

Noordhoek Farm Village has been running educational children’s activities every Saturday morning for free as part of their commitment to a child friendly society. This Christmas there are many children less fortunate than ourselves and in the spirit of the festive season we appeal to all visitors to Noordhoek Farm Village to bring a small donation of a book and/or a tin of food so we can share the gift of reading (and food) with those who have limited access to explore the world in ways that only books make possible.

A spokesperson for Noordhoek Farm Village said, “We’d like to feed our children with a culture of literacy, giving those tools to empower a new generation of parents, teachers and leaders. Reading provides education, education provides knowledge and knowledge creates opportunities for a better life. We’d love to inspire a love of reading and promote literacy and education. We’d love to inspire an interest and awareness of the world beyond the Noordhoek Valley.”

Sue Alexander of the Masiphumelele library says, “The children are hungry for books and for knowledge. There is a group of 60 children who have diligently persevered with a reading programme throughout 2009 and it would be fantastic to reward these children with a book of their own for Christmas.” Sue highlighted that simple non-fiction books suitable for primary school children would be best. “Books related to the human body, animals, craft and anything with a South African relevance would be most welcomed” says Sue. The books will be handed over to the library and the children at a year end function to be held in the first week of December 2009.

When donating books, consider the condition of the book and the accuracy of the content. Books that are falling apart won’t last through the many hands that will be sharing one book. Non fiction books published before the year 2000 are often out of date and no longer relevant. Think of bringing a gently used book, allow new readers to trace words with their fingers and consider books that are appropriate for the newly literate. Picture books are wonderful for smaller children. Bring stimulating books to encourage a love of reading and that will inspire the children to find definitions and explanations.

Please help Noordhoek Farm Village share the gift of reading this Christmas with the children of Masiphumelele and help feed a hungry child over the festive season.

How to donate:

1. Select a gently used book

2. Grab a tin of food from your cupboard.

3. Go down to Noordhoek Farm Village.

4. Look for the Signposted collection containers placed around the village

5. Drop your item in the book or tin bin.

6. So simple – you’re done. Thank You!

7. Donations will be accepted for the month of November

That far-off land at the end of the Blue Route and over Ou Kaapse Weg. Some of them derogatorily describe it as being 'behind the lentil curtain'. Isn't it far away, they ask? Well, not if that is where home is.

The Noordhoek Vikings are proud to call Noordhoek home, singing its praises to whomever will listen, wherever they travel. A motley cruë of sportsman, the Noordhoek Vikings travel the Mother City in search of ever-greater sporting conquests. And so it was that they journeyed to Hamiltons Rugby Club for the inaugural Cape Town Tens Rugby Tournament, on the weekend of February 6, 7, & 8.

The festivities began for the Noordhoek Vikings on Thursday February 5th. Thursdays are renowned for being 'braai night' at Café Roux, and this is where you would usually find the Noordhoek Vikings (if you know how to spot them), filling up on meat and ales, sharing stories around the fire and the bar, and, later on, dancing on the tables to the music of Daniel Green. This Thursday was different however, as the Vikings were to be found next door, at 'The Toad in the Village', for their capping ceremony and Cape Town Tens sendoff.

Bob Skinstad — himself a Viking, and one of the owners of 'the Toad' — had generously sponsored the Noordhoek Vikings' admission to the Cape Town Tens, and organized the most dashing rugby jerseys imaginable for each member of the team. Cheers went up and beers went down as each player received his jersey from Bob. The Vikings were given the send-off they deserved by the large crowd of village locals that had arrived to partake in the festivities. The word 'viking' literally means 'to go on an expedition'. True to their name, the Noordhoek Vikings were about to embark on their most challenging expedition yet, determined to make Noordhoek proud.

Friday afternoon and the team checked into its modest accommodation in Green Point. The backpackers was a drunken stumble away from Hamilton's Rugby Club — the venue for the Cape Town Tens — and the entire team would be sharing a cosy dorm room together for the duration of the weekend. Beers by the pool helped shake the ravages of the working week off, and soon the team was focusing on the daunting schedule that lay ahead. First up was the welcome party. Dressed in formal attire (khaki shorts, white shirt, skull cap), the Noordhoek Vikings made a grand entrance… and an even grander exit. It was well into the wee hours of the early morning before the team collapsed into their bunk beds for some shuteye before kickoff.

08h30 on a hot Saturday morning after a big night out is not the ideal time for contact sport. Lesser men would have surely declined. The Noordhoek Vikings bravely took their first fixture on the chin and trotted tipsily onto the field for their first game. They lost heavily. Fortunately there were only a handful of spectators who witnessed the Noordhoek Vikings looking rather worse for wear so early in the morning.

As the day wore on, the team recuperated in whatever shade they could find. The game of rugby soon took its heavy toll on the bodies of players who are not only Vikings, but fathers, husbands, and eligible bachelors. These were men who, while they should've been considering their longevity, were putting it all on the line in the name of comradeship. The last game of the day saw their efforts rewarded, as the Vikings pulled off a sensational victory in front of a packed 'Hammies' crowd.

Saturday night was a blur of beers and bruises, as the Vikings befriended opposition teams and adoring fans at the bar. While their bodies were aching for rest, the Vikings took no heed — dancing away to their very own Daniel Green, who had the festive crowd singing out of the palm of his hand. All told, it had been a proud day for the Noordhoek Vikings. Sunday seemed an eternity away.

Ten battle-weary Vikings hobbled onto the field the next morning for one of their two remaining two games. Those that simply couldn't walk anymore were draped along the touchline, sporting an array of slings, braces and bandages. In the Vikings' greatest hour of need, Bob Skinstad and Robbie Fleck (two fine Vikings themselves, not to mention tournament hosts) jogged on as substitutes, pepping up team morale with their presence. The Vikings soon ran in some splendid tries to sound off their tournament on an emphatic note.

Story written by Justin Nurse.

Horse Eventing on Noordhoek Common

Come join us this weekend, the 21st and the 22nd February, for a 3-phase horsing event on the common.

The two full days of horsing events will comprise of:

- Dressage on Saturday at the NRA clubhouse (Katzenellenbogen Rd, The Meadowsteads - off Avondrust Circle, Noordhoek)
- Showjumping for lower classes on The Common on Sat afternoon
- Cross-Country on Sun morning on the Common
- Showjumping for higher classes on the Common on Sun afternoon

Eventing is the most varied of all equestrian sports.

Dressage involves a series of set movements which are performed from a given test in an arena.

Cross country is where the competitor jumps a course of solid and imposing fences at speed.

Catering is available at the event, and the breakfast-rolls are the best in the West! However if you want a substantial meal pop across the road to Noordhoek Farm Village to one of the three fabulous restaurants which serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast sit under the oaks at Cafe Roux or indulge at the Foodbarn deli. Lunch options include Cafe Roux, The Toad in the Village and the Foodbarn. And whilst you are visiting, you can squeeze in some retail therapy!. Don't forget the kids activities which are free every Saturday between 10h30 and 12h30 at the bandstand. This Saturday it's Enchanted Parties theatre.

For more information on this event please contact Cate Biggs: speedyzoom@mweb.co.za

Showjumping entails jumping a single round of coloured fences. Scoring is on a penalty basis and the lowest score at the end of all three rounds is the winner.

The most exciting phase of the day's Horse events is the Cross-Country .... when all of the horses will be on the Common at the same time - usually from 8am.

There are a record number of entries this year - 179 horses across 9 classes. Two of the classes are so big - that they will be divided into 2 pools. Obviously, the higher classes are smaller ... these are our top Eventers (10 competing in Adult) who all hope to make our National Team to (hopefully) eventually represent SA at a future Olympic event.

Free Children's Activities every Saturday

Free children’s activities at Noordhoek Farm Village for kids aged 3- 7 years every Saturday from 10am – 12 noon.
