Noordhoek Farm Village Year End Function

2010 World Cup Soccer Fever was clearly evident at the Noordhoek Farm Village Year end Function held last night (Monday 7th December 2009) at Noordhoek Cricket Club.

Flags from round the globe were flying high and all the staff, tenants and suppliers came dressed up as their favourite soccer player or fan. South African flags were waved and proudly displayed at the first ever Noordhoek Farm Village football festival!

The evening started with a few friendly (but competitive) matches of the "beautiful game" with the Noordhoek Vikings taking on Cafe Roux.

Cape Town Tourism diski dancers arrived to teach the Noordhoek Farm Villagers a thing or two about learning to dance. Amanda and Wendy from Cape Town Tourism explained that diski dancing is a uniquely South African way of playing soccer. It's rhythmic, sometimes showy, but never boring. We call it Diski and it is uniquely South African. In Diski, every move has a name and there are different names from different parts of the country. Some are in Tswana, others Zulu, Sotho and even English. The moves have names like "Tsamaya", "Heel Extension Mkhari" and "Chester" to mention a few. There are five main moves that have to be put together to create a dance that is uniquely South African.

So the girls demonstrated and then the villagers took centre stage to learn the basic steps and co-ordinate the sequence of South Africa's Diski dance. Although not everyone mastered the art, the rhythm and spirit of African football could still be felt- and gives a good indication of the energy and passion that's in store for the world at the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. The Diski Dance is fun, fun, fun. It’s very easy to do. It makes you feel good. It makes you want to go out there; cheer for your team; paint your face in your national colours; wave your supporter’s flag; see goals being scored and celebrate with thousands and thousands of others. It’s inherently African, rhythmic, celebratory, vital, joyful.

The hilarity of the dancing was followed by an award ceremony. Spot prizes were distributed and awards for Best dressed were handed out.
